how we got here

Nika was supposed to be an average human and live an average human life. She wasn't supposed to be attacked by members of a rogue werewolf pack when she was a young teenage girl, and when it happened, she certainly wasn't meant to survive.
Nika wasn't supposed to be part of one of the old therianthropic families, but she was taken in after it became clear that 'the gift' had taken root in her after the attack. And once she was part of that family, she wasn't expected... wasn't supposed... to show an interest in the ways that the supernatural world policed itself while remaining hidden from most of humanity.
Nika has never been good at doing what she was supposed to.

Nika Casimsiman is a member of the Thiessen Pack -- one of several old lycanthrope families in the United States. She's not related to them by blood, and none of the Thiessens gave her 'the gift' of the bite, but the matriarch decided that she would be adopted in. And so she was.
The attack that turned her into a werewolf was perpetrated by a rogue pack -- one that had been started by a discontented son of the Pemberton Pack. This self-styled "alpha" basically created a gang, gave them the strength and animal nature of werewolves, and called it a pack. Young Nika was saved from certain death by the intervention of a pair of enforcers.
Part of the motivation for taking Nika in was ensuring that she knew how to safely handle her inner wolf. And another part of it was a long-standing rivalry between the Thiessen Pack and the Pemberton Pack... it was salt in the wound to the Pembertons' dignity that the Thiessens shielded the consequence of their son's foolishness, when the Pembertons would like nothing more than for Nika to disappear.
She learned everything she could about the hidden supernatural world that she'd fallen into. The enforcers who'd saved her life were a vampire and a werewolf, paired up to work on keeping the peace since allowing the two communities to self-police themselves hadn't worked. This was a common setup -- allowing werewolves to step in to put a stop to vampire criminals, and vice versa.
Nika grew up to become an enforcer herself. She is frequently partnered with Rue Garcia, a vampire who is just over one hundred years old.
Unfortunately, the enforcers are stretched rather thin and rarely have time to do anything but work to keep secrecy in place. So Nika really has no idea what work-life balance is. Currently, it doesn't bother her, because she's still pretty idealistic about getting to help people and keep the peace.
[EDIT (12/26/2024): I have changed the name of the pack that took Nika in, from Dunbar to Thiessen. (See the final paragraph of the "Becoming a werewolf" section of the Wikipedia article on "Werewolf" for the story of Thiess.)]
